There’s no way Trump can walk back comments revealing his penchant for celebrity sexual assault. The only play he’s got is to go forward, following a path he’s already blazed in other areas.
Just as Trump got in front of his donations to Democrats by saying he was only playing the corrupt political game, and playing it well, believe me; and just as he explained away his use of tax and bankruptcy laws, by saying he was brilliantly playing a corrupt game he didn’t invent; here, too, Trump’s only play is to call out the whole corrupt game of sexual exploitation by those in power, while trumpeting his own participation as a testament to his uniquely winning attitude and virile success.
Saying “Bill Clinton has said worse to me on the golf course” is not nearly bold enough. Trump has to speak that forbidden truth American society is already prepared to hear: powerful men sexually exploit women as a matter of course. And as a longtime, extremely successful, player in that game, Trump is in the best position to change things.
Trump knows the pimps and procurers and pedophiles. He’s got them on speed dial. He knows what really gets said out on the links and on the private jets. And now, Trump isn’t serving Trump anymore. Sure, Bill Clinton may, in the words of Colin Powell, still be “dicking bimbos” out in Chappaqua. By contrast, all of Trump’s brilliant and uniquely successful id is now in the service of his country. His appetite for power has trumped all others, and we can harness that titanic appetite as an instrument of revolutionary reform. Only Trump can clean up the interlocking networks of political, economic, and sexual corruption and exploitation.
Because in truth, no one knows them better.
